Aquaculture development in Ireland has been slow and uneven. There are strongly held and diametrically opposing views in relation to some types of aquaculture and the intensity of the debate has increased.
Aquaculture (less commonly spelled aquiculture), also known as aquafarming, is the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other lture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish. Aquaculture, also called fish farming, fish culture, or mariculture, an approximate equivalent in fishing to agriculture—that is, the rearing of fish, shellfish, and some aquatic plants to supplement the natural supply. Fish are reared under controlled conditions all over the world.
The Cooke Family of Companies. Fishing and farming isn’t just what we do. It’s who we are. Today, Cooke produces some of the very best seafood in the world. Locations of the salmonid farm sites operational in Ireland are indicated on the maps below.
